Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality

Tunç Soyer was born in Ankara in 1959 as the son of Nurettin Soyer and Güneş Soyer. After completing his primary and secondary education in İzmir, he graduated from Bornova Anatolian High School and Ankara University Faculty of Law. He completed two master’s degrees, one in “International Relations” at Webster University in Switzerland and the other in “European Union” at Dokuz Eylül University.

In 2003, he presented his report on the financial resources that could be obtained from the European Union to İzmir, to the Metropolitan Mayor of the time, Ahmet Piriştina, and accepted the offer of Piriştina and started to work as the mayor’s advisor of the Metropolitan Municipality. Between 2004-2006, he worked as the foreign relations director and assistant general secretary at the Izmir Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the EXPO 2015 Izmir Steering Committee and Executive Committee by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2009 and 2014, he was elected as the Mayor of Seferihisar from the Republican People’s Party. He participated in the 2019 Turkey local elections as the CHP’s İzmir Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate and was elected president with 58% of the votes and took office on April 8, 2019. Soyer speaks English and French. He is married and has two children.
