Prof. Dr. Emrah Safa GÜRKAN 2003 yılında Bilkent Üniversitesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nden mezun olduktan sonra, gene aynı üniversitenin Tarih Bölümü’nde Prof. Halil İnalcık’ın danışmanlığında 16. Yüzyılda Batı Akdeniz’de Osmanlı korsanları üzerine hazırladığı tezle 2006 yılında yüksek lisans derecesini aldı. Doktora çalışmalarını 2012 yılında Georgetown Üniversitesi’nde Osmanlı-Habsburg rekabeti çerçevesinde 16. Yüzyıl Akdenizi’nde İstihbarat konusu üzerine tamamladı. Medeniyetler arası diplomasi, saray hizipleri, Osmanlı stratejisi ve karar alma mekanizması, serhat çalışmaları, korsanlık, kölelik ve ihtida konuları üzerine uzmanlaşan Gürkan çeşitli uluslararası dergilerde makaleler yayınladı.
